My Favorite Horror Theme Songs and Original Scores

I've heard rumors that many film schools force students to watch horror movies on mute to stress the importance of music and sound effects in cinema. With no ominous sound cues, the visuals tend to fall flat, the scare scenes lose their luster and the entire film becomes almost comical to watch. If you don't believe me, try it sometime (and if you still find yourself clinging to the edge of your seat and biting your nails in fear-filled anticipation, we can't be friends anymore, because you must be a super wimp).

For decades, horror directors have relied heavily on composers to create perfectly tailored soundtracks for their films and television shows. These songs and scores are what tell us there might be something sinister hiding around the corner -- or that a character is about the get the ax. To celebrate the importance of music in the genre, I've put together a little playlist of some of my favorite theme songs and original scores from iconic horror films and shows. It's perfect for busting out at your next Halloween party or setting the mood while you read Stephen King's latest book.

  1. American Horror Story's theme song stresses me out so much, but it's so good!
