Denver Comic Con 2015

Last Thursday I woke up to a text from my friend Shay offering Meg, Z and I free passes to Denver Comic Con, and naturally, we were all too happy to accept. This sparked an intense 24 hour craft-a-thon as Meg and I scrambled to throw together last minute cosplays because there was no way I was going to my first comic convention in street clothes. I dressed up as Black Cat, and she went as Poison Ivy. I overnighted the wig and catsuit from Amazon, then made the mask, gloves and bootcuffs. The corset is my CS411 which I have previously featured here and here. Meg's costume was far more ambitious, and was 100% made from scratch -- dress and all -- in just one day.

We only had Sunday passes so it was impossible to see and do everything. We did a round of SciFi Speed Dating which was equal parts awkward and awesome, but missed out on all of the panels and events I had hoped we'd squeeze into the schedule. I failed as photographer, and barely took any pictures of the day. A bunch of people asked to pose for photos which was a totally new and weird experience I hadn't really expected, so somewhere out there are a lot more photos of me all dressed up and super villainy that I'll likely never see. Bummer.

Comic Con was an absolute blast, and we're already making plans for our next convention! I'm planning a pretty epic Pokemon cosplay for Nan Desu Kan in September, and I'm super stoked to have more time to put something together next time around!

Happy Birthday, Rats!

A few weeks ago marked one year since we rescued Ghost and Gypsy, but since Ghost was still recovering from surgery it just kind of sneaked by. After nearly a month of having to be kept separately in her post-op tank, Ghost was finally healed enough last night to rejoin Gypsy in their cage, and we decided it would be fun to throw them a little party to celebrate both occasions. I made them a bunch of new hammocks and redecorated the whole cage as their big present. Since their cage is set up in my craft room and I'm a dweeb, it's all Halloween-themed to match the rest of the room. They also got some new toys and treats and we let them share a few bites of mini cupcake, which they loved! I know a rat birthday party probably seems really silly, but I figure their lives are too short to care about such nonsense. Let them eat cake.

I'm so happy that Ghost's surgery saga has finally come to an end, There were a lot of complications which made healing a far longer process than it should have been. About a week ago, we found another mass on the other side of her body and have opted not to put her through another surgery because the first was so hard on her. We are trying a more holistic approach to try to slow its growth and have noticed it making a difference already. She's in amazingly high spirits and acts like she doesn't even notice the little bump, so we're really just focusing on maintaining this quality of life for her for as long as possible.

Sunday Sketch: Acanthoscurria geniculata

As part of my 25 before 26, I'm making an effort to start and finish at least one drawing per week to fulfill my goal of filling a sketchbook by next year. It's been years since art has been a regular part of my weekly routine, but so far I've really enjoyed taking time out to doodle in lieu of having a mountain of homework to do since finals are (finally) over. This is a quick sketch I did of a Brazilian White Knee tarantula using ink and white colored pencils, and I'm decently pleased with how it turned out.
